The AMC 12 is one of the most challenging and prestigious high school mathematics competitions worldwide. It is the senior-level gateway to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, the USAMO, and ultimately the International Mathematical Olympiad. For advanced mathematics students in Grade 12 or below, AMC 12 preparation is a serious commitment and a genuinely rewarding one.
Admissions readers at math-serious institutions treat AMC results as one of the few precisely calibrated signals in an application. MIT provides optional fields for AMC and AIME scores, and programs built around quantitative talent read the results carefully.
This complete guide covers everything you need: the AMC 12 syllabus, exam pattern, the new 2027 AIME cutoff, topic-wise preparation strategy, and a structured study plan.
The AMC 12 covers the full high-school mathematics curriculum, including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry. Calculus is excluded.
The AMC 12 is also the gateway to the USAMO, the senior national olympiad. Students who perform strongly on AMC 12 qualify for AIME, which then leads to USAMO selection — one of the most selective academic achievements available to high school students globally.
Exam Dates:
| Competition | Date |
| AMC 12A | 5 November 2026 |
| AMC 12B | 13 November 2026 |
| AIME | 5 to 6 February 2027 |
| USAMO | 20 to 21 March 2027 |
| Detail | Information |
| Total Questions | 30 |
| Duration | 75 minutes |
| Question Type | Multiple choice — 5 options (A to E) |
| Calculator | NOT allowed |
| Correct Answer | 6 points |
| Blank Answer | 1.5 points |
| Wrong Answer | 0 points |
| Maximum Score | 150 points |
Because qualification rules are changing in 2027, previous AIME cutoff scores should no longer be used to predict the 2027 qualifying score. Students qualify with 85 or higher on AMC 12, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements. This replaces the previous percentage-based cutoff system.
A student who answers 11 questions correctly and leaves the other 14 blank scores 87 and clears the new AIME threshold of 85.
| Questions Correct | Blanks | Score | AIME Qualified? |
| 25 | 5 | 157.5 | ✅ Yes |
| 15 | 15 | 112.5 | ✅ Yes |
| 11 | 19 | 87 | ✅ Yes |
| 10 | 20 | 81 | ❌ No |
| 9 | 21 | 75 | ❌ No |
For the 2026-27 academic year, AMC 10 and AMC 12 scores will no longer affect qualification for USAMO after the student qualifies for AIME. USAMO qualification is based primarily on AIME scores from 2027 onwards.
AMC 12 is open to students in Grade 12 or below who are 19.5 years old or younger on competition day.
Only students aged 13 and older can take the AIME in addition to the usual age and grade rules. Younger students who reach the cutoff will not be able to take the 2027 AIME.
AMC 12 has the same 30-question structure as AMC 10, but the difficulty ramp is steeper. Problems 20 to 30 on AMC 12 are genuinely hard. Securing 90 or more points from the first 20 problems is a stronger strategy than spreading effort evenly across all 30.
| Questions | Difficulty Level | Strategy |
| Q1 to Q10 | Easy, accessible to all strong students | Solve every one in under 1 minute |
| Q11 to Q20 | Medium to Hard AIME qualification zone | Average 2 to 3 minutes each |
| Q21 to Q30 | Very Hard Honor Roll zone | Attempt only if time permits |
The first ten questions are accessible to any strong student. The middle ten decide AIME qualification. The last five decide the honor rolls.

What to do in Phase 1:
Resources for Phase 1:
AMC questions are not about formulas — they are about creative problem-solving. Students must learn to recognize patterns, eliminate answer choices logically, visualize problems geometrically, and approach problems from multiple angles.
What to do in Phase 2:
Securing 90 or more points from the first 20 problems is a stronger strategy than spreading effort evenly across all 30 questions. AIME qualification target is to score 88 to 95 or more on the AMC 12 to comfortably clear the cutoff.
What to do in Phase 3:
Leaving a question blank is worth a quarter of a correct answer, which means disciplined omission is a scoring strategy, not a concession.
How to apply Skip Strategy on AMC 12:
The 2026-27 AIME cutoff is fixed at 100 on AMC 10 and 85 on AMC 12. The AMC 12 needs fewer points — 85 instead of 100 — but its problems cover more advanced topics such as trigonometry and logarithms.
