Cambridge International Mathematics is one of the most widely recognised and respected mathematics curricula in the world. Students from Grade 6 to Grade 12 across India, UAE, Singapore, the UK, and over 160 countries follow Cambridge Mathematics as their primary Maths education pathway.
This complete guide covers the Cambridge Mathematics curriculum from Grade 6 through Grade 12 — including syllabuses, topics, exam patterns, and preparation guidance for every level.
Important Note: Cambridge International does not publish one single Mathematics syllabus divided strictly into Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8 and so on. Instead, Mathematics is organised through Cambridge Primary stages, Cambridge Lower Secondary stages, Cambridge IGCSE qualifications and Cambridge International AS and A Level qualifications. The grade-wise headings used in this guide represent a typical school progression and not an official Cambridge grade-to-stage equivalence. The exact grade and year mapping can vary by school and country.

Cambridge Primary Mathematics Stage 6 is the highest level of Cambridge Primary. It is usually finished by 10 or 11 year old. This stage is for developing solid Maths knowledge and preparation for Cambridge Lower Secondary.
Cambridge Primary Mathematics consists of three strands that are integrated throughout the Primary stages:
Strand 1: Number
Strand 2: Geometry and Measure
Strand 3: Statistics and Probability
Problem Solving and Mathematical Reasoning run through all three strands at every stage.
There is no external exam at Stage 6 for Cambridge Primary Mathematics. Many schools, however, have adopted the Cambridge Primary Progression Tests as a way of monitoring their own students’ progress. At the end of Stage 6, a Cambridge Primary Checkpoint is available if the school elects to offer it as an option.
Cambridge Assessment Lower Secondary Mathematics (Stage 7) represents a step up from Primary to Secondary level thinking. From Stage 7 onwards, the mathematical content becomes increasingly abstract and algebraic.
There are three strands of continuity within Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics:
Strand 1: Number
Strand 2: Algebra, Geometry and Measure
Strand 3: Statistics and Probability
Cambridge Lower Secondary Progress Tests are available for Stages 7, 8 and 9. These are optional school-based assessments. No external public examination exists specifically for Stage 7.
Stage 8 deepens the algebraic and geometric understanding developed in Stage 7. The complexity of problems increases significantly, and students begin working with more abstract mathematical concepts.
Number
Algebra, Geometry and Measure
Statistics and Probability
Schools use Cambridge Lower Secondary Progress Tests for Stage 8 internally. The Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint, available at the end of Stage 9, provides external benchmarking for all Lower Secondary stages, including Stage 8 content.
Stage 9 is the final and most important stage of Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics. It directly prepares students for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics. The Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint assessment at the end of Stage 9 provides an internationally recognised benchmark of student achievement.
Number
Algebra, Geometry and Measure
Statistics and Probability
The Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint is an external assessment designed for the end of Stage 9. It provides preparation and foundation for Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge O Level. Checkpoint results are reported on a Cambridge scale of 0 to 6 for each strand separately.
This makes Stage 9 and the Checkpoint assessment particularly valuable for:
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is the primary Cambridge secondary qualification for mathematics. It is typically completed in Grade 10 or Year 10 to 11 depending on the school’s programme structure.
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is tiered. The Core subject content targets grades C to G and the Extended subject content targets grades A* to C. Extended contains all Core content plus additional advanced topics.
Students targeting STEM universities, A Level Mathematics or any competitive academic pathway should always choose the Extended tier.
| Paper | Tier | Duration | Marks | Calculator |
| Paper 1 | Core | 1.5 hours | 80 marks | NOT allowed |
| Paper 3 | Core | 1.5 hours | 80 marks | Allowed |
| Paper 2 | Extended | 2 hours | 100 marks | NOT allowed |
| Paper 4 | Extended | 2 hours | 100 marks | Allowed |
Key change from 2025: Papers 1 and 2 are now non-calculator papers. Both papers now carry equal marks and time — a significant shift from the previous syllabus structure.
1. Number: Types of numbers, standard form, ratio, percentages, surds (Extended)
2. Algebra and Graphs: Linear and quadratic equations, functions, sequences, exponential functions (Extended)
3. Coordinate Geometry: Straight lines, equation of a circle (Extended)
4. Geometry: Angles, triangles, circle theorems, constructions
5. Mensuration: Area, perimeter, volume and surface area
6. Trigonometry: Sine, cosine and tangent ratios, sine and cosine rules, 3D trigonometry (Extended)
7. Transformations and Vectors:All four transformations, vectors and vector proofs (Extended)
8. Probability: Combined events, tree diagrams, conditional probability (Extended)
9. Statistics: Data representation, averages, cumulative frequency, standard deviation (Extended)
Grade 11 is a transition year in the Cambridge pathway. Depending on the school and programme, students in Grade 11 may be:
It is important to understand that Cambridge does not publish a universal Grade 11 Maths syllabus. The programme a student follows in Grade 11 depends entirely on their school’s curriculum structure and the student’s own academic pathway.
Students completing IGCSE in Grade 11 in November should focus on:
Students who complete IGCSE early and begin AS Level in Grade 11 should note that Cambridge International AS Level Mathematics 9709 covers significantly more advanced content than IGCSE. A strong grade in IGCSE Extended Mathematics is essential preparation for AS Level.
Cambridge International Mathematics 9709 is the most advanced Cambridge Mathematics qualification available to school students. It is internationally recognised by universities across the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore and beyond.
Cambridge’s 9709 programme offers different AS Level routes for schools to choose from:
Route 1: Pure Mathematics only
Students study Pure Mathematics 1 (Paper 1) only.
Route 2: Pure Mathematics and Mechanics
Students study Pure Mathematics 1 (Paper 1) and Mechanics (Paper 4).
Route 3: Pure Mathematics and Probability and Statistics
Students study Pure Mathematics 1 (Paper 1) and Probability and Statistics 1 (Paper 5).
A Level students study all AS content plus:
Pure Mathematics 1 (Paper 1) AS Level
Pure Mathematics 2 and 3 (Papers 2 and 3) — A Level
Mechanics (Paper 4) — AS or A Level
Probability and Statistics 1 (Paper 5) — AS Level
